Robert O'Brien is Senior Vice President heading Amalgamated Bank's Public Finance Division. He reports to President and CEO.
Mr. O'Brien is responsible for business development to US public finance entities with an emphasis on lending to distressed municipalities across the country. The Bank will also work with investment-grade entities and non-rated entities in most public finance sectors including tax-supported, airports, public utilities, transportation, higher education and non-profits.
Mr. O'Brien is a 14-year public finance veteran combining business development, transaction execution and credit underwriting experience in most public finance sectors. His background includes experience in the commercial banking, bond insurance and ratings agency sectors.
Before joining Amalgamated, Mr. O'Brien started and headed the public finance group at LBBW, Germany's fifth-largest bank, where he built a $5.5B loan portfolio consisting of credit enhancement and liquidity lines of credit for variable-rate demand bonds and commercial paper in the US public finance market.
He also headed the municipal finance credit underwriting efforts of BluePoint Re, a start-up bond reinsurer located in Bermuda and owned by Wachovia, growing the US municipal portfolio to $16B (par). At BluePoint, he led the company's efforts at becoming one of the initial providers of municipal credit default swaps in the US municipal finance secondary market.
Mr. O'Brien's experience also includes time at Fitch Ratings where he analyzed local municipal issuers and rated municipal structured transactions. He began his commercial banking career at First Fidelity Bank where he successfully completed the bank's 18-month formal commercial credit training program. Mr. O'Brien earned an MPA from Columbia University and a BA from the University of Pennsylvania.
